Shift Swap Success Story

Shift patterns can be a pain when you’re trying to balance work and life, but I found a way that works for me.
So, here’s my story. At Eastern District Power Authority, we have these shifts where you’re on one day, off the next, and so on. This system is fine in theory, but it can be tough when something comes up—like when my spouse needs to attend a family gathering or I need some extra time for a project.
One trick that’s helped me out is the shift swap request form. You just fill it out with your reasons (a quick write-up about why you need it) and send it over. It’s not always approved, but it definitely helps. Last week, my shift got swapped to cover an urgent task at home. The supervisor was a bit hesitant, but I reminded them of the CDI score impact—every extra hour on that project meant better performance metrics for both me and the team.
This swap turned out great. Not only did we get the work done faster, but it also helped smooth things over with my spouse’s family. Sometimes, just a little flexibility can make all the difference in keeping your life running smoothly while still meeting workplace expectations.
